Have you ever wondered how to be a good friend? Or maybe you have given up on friendship because it is just too hard. Wherever you stand on friendship, I think you would really like Never Unfriended by Lisa-Jo Baker. Here are three reasons why.
If you have always wanted to fit in
I am almost 39 years old and I still want to be one of the “cool kids.” Maybe you can relate? Lisa-Jo began Chapter eleven with: “Everyone is on the outside of something. But that is only half the story. We are all, each one of us, also on the inside of something-often without even realizing it.”
What are we on the inside of? If you are a believer you are known by a God who loves you deeply. You are a daughter of the King of Kings. When you are firm in who we are in Jesus, you can live out of that. You do fit in!
If you want to go deeper in your friendships
It’s important to make the time and space to be together with your friends If you want to go deeper. This is so true! Lisa-Jo talked about soul food conversations. “The kind that doesn’t cut you off because they have another meeting to run to. The kind that lingers.” I resonated so well with this because I love quality time with my friends. There is nothing like a good soul conversation. Let’s commit to going deeper in our friendships by making time and space to connect.
If you have ever wondered how to be a good friend
As women, we all long to have friends. But all too often, we don’t know how to be a good friend. Lisa-Jo ends the book with two very powerful chapters addressing this.
First, we need to be a friend to ourselves. One of my favorite quotes in Chapter 14 is “The words we say to ourselves matter because the God who is The Word says we matter. And it’s time we start believing Him.” Until we believe God’s truth about who we are in Him, we can’t be a good friend.
Secondly, to be a good friend we need to keep showing up for our friends. “With open hands and open doors and messy houses and lives and honest words and second, third, fourth chances.”
